Solar 4R Schools

Schools in running for Ecopalooza Solar 4RSchools small scale solar installation
July 2011

Chief Joseph – PK – 5 – Joe Galati – 2409 N Saratoga, 97217
If Chief Joseph was fortunate to receive this, our students would be able to see another example of being green, learning about energy, and monitoring this through the use of the school’s Friday flier. At Chief Joseph we have a club that monitors and educates our school about our role as being green conscious. We are called the green girls. Please give us the opportunity to use this resource to do even more good at our school.

Gray – 6-8 MS – Beth Madison – 5505 SW 23rd , 9797239
Robert Gray Middle School sits in an excellent location ripe with direct sunlight ready for harvest. Students at Gray excel in academics and have a strong interest in the environment and technology. With a strong parent group supporting the school, the solar project would provide an important community focus on our sustainable future.

James John – K -5 – Beth Shelby – 7439 N Charleston, 97203
James John Elementary, “The Pride of St. Johns”, has demonstrated a strong commitment to reduction of energy consumption and earned the highest PPS award for voluntary energy reduction by reducing our energy consumption at least 20%. Our students, staff, PTA and extended community support sustainable and environmentally sound practices and we are constantly seeking ways to reduce our footprint. Students are directly involved and take ownership. We are currently involved in a DePave project to replace 4000 square feet of blacktop playground with natural play spaces and vegetation and future plans include the installation of a bioswale to reduce run-off from the hardscape areas. A solar installation would increase the energy savings for our building, model alternative energy sources and provide an opportunity to students to learn through experience-based opportunities otherwise unavailable to them.

Lee – K-8 – Leslie O’Dell – 2222 NE 92nd , 97220
Jason Lee School is strongly committed to environmental conservation and stewardship. As an active member of the Oregon Green Schools Association, Lee has gone above and beyond standard sustainability practices by investing in reusable trays for the cafeteria and planting dozens of trees on campus over the past two years. A solar panel installation would not only align with Lee’s values, but would further our efforts and dedication to preserve the environment. Lee’s students, staff and families fully understand the importance of renewable energies, such as solar power, and hope to become a part of the solution that produces cleaner energy.

Markham – K-5 – Shawn Garnett 10531 SW Capitol Hwy, 97219
Markham should be selected for a small scale solar installation because it is a community that embraces environmental awareness and efficacy through recycling, community gardening and reusable lunch trays.
Our school may be old and in need of many repairs and replacements, but the students and community make it a wonderful place to be and a solar installation would only help to magnify the environmentally responsible citizens that house and care for our school.
